2024 China VPN Speed Test Blog

The latest VPN speed test results and tips for using a VPN in China in 2024.

All testing is done on a cloud computer in Shenzhen with a China Telecom 100Mbps connections unless stated otherwise.

Welcome back to the China VPN blog! It’s been a long time since my last update. Better late than never. Let’s get started.

June 10, 2024 – Wannaflix vs 12VPN vs VPN.ac

Wannaflix is still working very well and remains my top recommendation.

Wannaflix China Daily Usage #1 – V2ray

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 10/106.28/91.03

This is the best working server I could find. Although the “China Daily Usage” servers don’t have a specific advertised location, this one appears to be in Hong Kong. The ping time to Shenzhen is only 10ms! And the download speed maxes out my 100Mbps connection!

Wannaflix China Daily Usage #2 – V2ray

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 144/19.86/45.95

This one appears to be in Japan and doesn’t perform quite as well.

The China daily 3 server didn’t appear to be working.

Wannaflix China Daily Usage #4 – V2ray

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 177/101/88.24

This one appears to be in Singapore. The speed is great, but the ping time is a little high.

Next up is 12VPN. It’s been a while since I tested 12VPN and I see they have made some nice changes to their website.

You can now test the servers directly from their website.

With this handy tool I was able to narrow down the best servers pretty quickly.

Most of the best servers are the free “add-on” servers that you need to manually add to your account. To find this option, go to Account –> Servers –> Add Servers.

These tests were done using their VPNGUI Windows app.

12VPN Taipei – XTLS China

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 73/35.98/7.42

Decent ping time and average speed. Not bad overall.

12VPN Tokyo GSL – XTLS China

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 65/70/67

Great ping time and very good speed too. I think this is the best working 12VPN server for China Telecom connections.

12VPN Los Angeles GTT – XTLS China

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 186/84.33/53.49

Very nice performance for a USA server.

Overall, I think 12VPN has improved greatly since the last time I tried it.

For the last test today, I will try an old favorite of mine VPN.ac.

At first I couldn’t connect using OpenVPN due to a problem with my test computer. So I started the test with IKEv2/IPsec.

All testing was done using the VPN.ac Windows app.

VPN.ac Taipei – IKEv2/IPsec

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 43/40.35/16.87

Very low ping and decent download speed.

VPN.ac Vancouver – IKEv2/IPsec

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 286/1.21/7.54

Not very good performance, but this was the only other server I could find that connected using IKEv2/IPsec.

I later managed to sort out the issue on my computer and was able to connect to some more servers using OpenVPN XOR.

VPN.ac Los Angeles 4 (CN2) – OpenVPN XOR

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 163/10.46/6.32

Good ping time for USA but not very good download speed.

VPN.ac Los Angeles 5 (CN2) – OpenVPN XOR

Speedtest.net result. Ping/Download/Upload: 162/17.62/9.06

This one is a bit faster with a similar ping time.

The other servers I tested either didn’t work or were very slow. The main servers working good are Taipei, Los Angeles 4 (CN2), and Los Angeles 5 (CN2).
